The Post About The Rabbit Recommends v.91

Each week or so I post a readable or watchable and/or a listenable of which I'm fond. You can choose what happens after my recommendation. Ignore, embrace, debate.

Earlier volumes of The Rabbit Recommends can be found here.

Read
I previously suggested Book 1 in the Hunger Games Trilogy and I stand by that now having finished Book 2 - Catching Fire. With all the buzz about the new movie, it nudged me to get back on that divine horse created by Suzanne Collins to find out what happens next. And what happens next is excellent. As a refresher: Hunger Games is a set of science fiction novels which perfectly blend a post-apocalyptic Earth and a reality show. And who of us doesn't want to read that?

Watch

Jamie's Summer = humidity, iced coffee, Whitney "lip" and So You Think You Can Dance. My affection for this show is rooted in my own near-miss tap dance career. That affection only blossoms because of the kind, gorgeous host, the creepy father-figure executive producer, and the choreographers whose left brains were constructed from cotton candy and baby fat rolls. Delightful. Plus, my music budget busts a gut when I fall for artists like Róisín Murphy, Citizen Cope, JJ Heller and the Junior Boys featured above.

And yes, I think I can dance.

Listen
I'm probably partial to Matthew Mayfield because he's from Alabama. Like Channing Tatum and Bo Jackson. Pretty faces may or may not be influencing my inclinations.

Mr. Mayfield is all skinny jeans and v-necks, but with talent to match.

Missed Me, off his new album, Now You're Here, birthed a video love letter to my favorite city, Birmingham. You come visit and you'll love it too.

If you're not convinced, consider downloading the FREE EP at Noisetrade. It includes a song "First in Line" that kills me. In the best way.

  1. I am becoming dangerously obsessed with the Hunger Games. Every mention of the people from the capital also makes me want new wigs.

  2. Ahh, SYTYCD. One of the best things about summer along with farm fresh produce. Chelsea and Mark dancing to Bleeding Love is still one of my favorite routines, but I bought that Roisin Murphy song, too! (Loved Brandon and Janette in that one. A friend and I watched it over and over so she could try to learn one of the steps. I have two left feet so didn't even try.)

I didn't think I'd like the all star format last year but I think the contestants were so much better because of it. Any idea if they're keeping to that format this year? I don't think I've seen anything about it, but I'm assuming so.

  3. I'm deciding how to dress as Effie for a special occasion. Like a Thursday.

  4. I adored that Bleeding Love piece too - I pretty much loved Mark in every dance! They are keeping the all-star format, but waiting to announce the list. I think I could take it or leave it - but it's fun to see the ones I've adored from the past - Neil, Pasha, etc.

  5. I would like to remind you that I carry a gun before I make my comment.

I am just as excited as you that SYTYCD is back.  I love that show.  So much more talent and humility than American Idol (which I have long since given up watching).

I know nothing of Hunger Games.  I am, however, a voracious reader and always looking for something new.  Please tell me it's nothing like Twilight else I shall have to hunt you down.  That chick is a terrible writer.

  6. I guess a gun cements your gun card, right? Hunger Games really is different than Twilight (which I have consumed...) much less romance, much more teens fighting to the death. You won't even have to flash your gun if you read it.

  7. Hey Jamie! Usually I don't go much for dancing, but I really enjoyed that SYTYCN clip. It reminded me of the "Two Worlds" routine from John Tesh's "Alive" concert. Thought you might want to check it out. She's beautiful beyond words, and he's an incredibly talented smart alec. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-rIMMhjfUg

Also, must check out The Hunger Games. Heard nothing but goof biz about it.

  8. How fun was that clip!?! I'm already a sucker for dance en pointe so it was right up my alley. They just needed a tad more stage - but I guess you need room for Tesh.

  9. I read a lot. I am also a teacher, which means I read a lot of kids books. The Hunger Games are technically junior fiction, but they`re my number one recommendation to any adult. Ever. Seriously brilliant pieces of fiction. Good stuff!

  10. I just finished The Hunger Games. I plan to read the next one soon. My group of friends has been reading these books obsessively and although I liked the first book, I'm still making up my mind about what it means and whether the violence between children is too disturbing.

  11. I think I get to be an honorary teacher since we share this opinion. I pick "Home Ec."

  12. I agree the violence is intense, but I think I was more invested in the plot because if it.

  14. Just got Hunger Games for Kindle. It's on my ever-growing list of summer reads. Too many books, so little time.

  15. I'm hoping it will end up making a snazzy movie - I love the casting!

  16. At least the Kindle makes it super easy to read whenever and wherever. Kindle is my goal purchase when you can officially check out from the library on it - which is supposed to be late summer...

  17. I heard about that--how cool! They've got lending now (where the
publisher allows), and to have library checkouts is just the epitome
    of convenience.

  18. With a chin that manly, I'm amazed they could fit anyone else on there. Here's one with Tesh and Breeze Lee (the hip hop guy from that video): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwwuxvcjM8E&feature=relmfu
