The Post About Why a Blackberry and iPhone Can't Be Friends

L1030954Text conversation with my friend Caryann after 11pm one night this week. It began when I heard the cheesiest song ever on the radio. I wanted to blame her since she works for a record label.

The song and artist names have been changed to protect the non-enemy of the Cross.

Me: "Name of song" by "John Doe" is worst Christian song ever. That includes all of Stryper's catalog.

Caryann: That's a bold statement. You haven't heard all of "John Doe's" songs.

Me: Touché.

Caryann: Ummm...what?

Me: Sound it out. You can do it.

Caryann: I don't know what you mean?

Me: Touché is a COMMON term meaning "good point." It was a compliment you loser.

Caryann: If you mean touche, I've never seen it written that way. I didn't know.

Me: It's French. And you just wrote it the exact same way without an accent mark. Do I need to call 911? Are you seeing spots?

Caryann: Well that explains why I couldn't figure out what you meant. It says the word "touch" with a period & then a question mark.

Me: Your Blackberry is stupid. And racist. Viva la iPhone.

Me: P.S. This is going in the blog.

Caryann was kind enough to post the following on Twitter in the middle of this conversation:

texts from a friend making no sense. I can't tell her if it's that her iPhone auto-correct strikes again, or she's a wee bit tipsy.

Mom - I was not tipsy.

The Post About TOMS and V-necks

TOMS shoes
TOMS shoes received a lot of press last week for One Day without Shoes which encouraged folks to go barefoot to raise awareness about the impact one pair of shoes can have on the life of a child. Particularly for those in Third World countries. When you buy a pair of TOMS shoes, they donate a pair.

This is a transcript of a recent telephone conversation between me and my friend Caryann who lives in California and works as a radio personality. No emphasis on personality.

Caryann:
Have you heard of TOMS shoes?

Me: Yep.

Caryann: They're real big here. You know those kids probably don't even want shoes.

Me: Strangely enough, I'm going to go Republican and agree with you. We need to be getting them clean water and vaccinations, rather than shoes.

Caryann: My friend who did mission work in third world countries said when churches would bring them shoes that the kids would take them off as soon as they left.

Me: Plus, to be honest, TOMS shoes are ugly.

Caryann: Since you don't like them, I'll probably buy them. Plus, they're what everyone in the music industry wears.

Me: Well, that will mean you'll also need to start wearing v-necks and skinny jeans too. And we both know that second one's not happening.

Caryann: Well, you have to wear v-necks in order for them to fit over your big head.

Me:
{pause} Well played.

The Post About Your a Looser

Crimson Tide Cake Pop

Caryann: I get really annoyed by grammatical errors.

Jamie: It's always the ones like "It's/Its" or "There/They're/Their" or "Effect/Affect" that get folks messed up.

Caryann: I want to correct some people but I know they might get their feelings hurt.

Jamie: What I don't understand is "Lose" and "Loose." How do you get those mixed up?

Caryann: What did you say?

Jamie: "LOSE" and "LOOSE."

Caryann: Do you mean "lose" like Alabama is going to lose to Texas in the National Championship?

Jamie: No, I mean "loose" like Caryann is loose like a harlot.

May the SEC overcome it's its enemies.

The Post About Sarcasm as a Love Language

Heart SprinkleTranscript of recent text conversation between me and Caryann.

Character Recap: Caryann is one of my closest friends who works for a record label in Nashville.

Me: If I don't have a boyfriend by October 7, you should drive here and go to The Civil Wars show at the Alabama Theatre with me.

Caryann: Okay. I should go ahead and put it on my calendar.

Me: Shut it.

Caryann: You work with women and go to church with the elderly. I'm just being reasonable.

Me: Fooey.

Caryann: If I want a boyfriend whom I don't outweigh and doesn't question his sexuality, my pickin's are slim too.

Me: Great. We can share an apartment at the retirement complex and découpage things with our cats.

The Post About Blue Collar Love Affairs

Phone conversation from last night:

Caryann:
The guy who delivered my washer and dryer was great.

Me: Really?

Caryann: Yeah.

Me:
Was he cute?

Caryann: I guess so - for a young married guy.

Me: Wait...what is up with me being overly attracted to blue collar guys?

Caryann: I don't know.

Me: I need someone with an income.

Caryann: You just need...someone.

The {Guest} Post About Baby Mama Drama

Today's guester is Caryann. She's my best single friend. We both have best friends who are married, however, it's always good to invite someone to your friend shindig who can understand dating and parenting plants and managing a one income household. Caryann was an on-air radio punk for 15 years in Texas, Alabama and California. She now makes her home in Nashville and works at a swanky record label. Its swankiness is defined by the Starbucks machine in the break room.

Caryann flipping her hair near some rocks.
If you are single and in your 30s, or have been, then you are probably very familiar with the formula questions that come from well-meaning family, friends, co-workers, and even strangers. These questions usually involve an investigation into whether or not you're dating anyone, want to date anyone, or how many cats you currently have and whether or not that number seems to be trending up.

One other very common question came recently, from the lips of a very cute, amazingly talented dude, of whom I’ve grown quite fond…"So do you ever want a family?"

The portion of my brain that banks all of the things that married guys tell me are dating cues, started going off like an alarm. He’s trying to figure out if I want a family with HIM someday! This means he must be interested in me. He might propose in a few minutes.

Never mind this is only the third time we’ve seen each other.

If you know anything about single women, you know we are very creative.

Before I even answered this guy’s question, I had formulated what diamond cut I would hint toward, how my first name would gel with his last, and with whose relatives we would spend next Christmas.

Ridiculous. But it’s in our DNA.

And from my mouth came the biggest lie I had told in all of my life. “I’m not sure.”

What? I had just uttered the words "I don’t want children" to my roommate two days prior. Such a hypocrite.

But he was so cute... It was necessary, in my mind.

Once he got to know me, he would fall so crazy in love with my personality and heart, that my lack of desire for children would no longer matter. So I should not scare him off now. This is what I convinced myself of in the nano-second before I lied to him.

Then I went on to explain how I definitely desired to be married (which I might have said with a wink and flip of the hair), but my uncertainty came from whether I wanted my own biological children; to give a home to kids who needed one; or just to love someone else's children. (Because I'll deal with baby-mama-drama if he's hot enough.)

The wild thing is that as I was formulating my fabrication, I actually felt like it was true. Maybe I did want kids someday. Maybe the falsehood is really in what I told my roommate, not what I told super-hot-rock-star-looking-guy.

The prideful part of me cannot admit that maybe, just maybe, I do have that maternal instinct kicking in. I guess I’m just a little late in the game.

But I cannot let this be known. It would cause me to lose some major cool points, mostly with my friends who are mothers who love their children dearly, but would give anything for neverending alone time. Plus, I would be forced to act like a grown up, eat more vegetables, and remove my facial piercings.

No can do.

Have you ever kept something on the down low for the sake of saving face?

Note from Jamie: Answer that question and then... Well...you can't read Caryann's blog because she doesn't write one. She has a Facebook, but doesn't check it. And she's on Twitter. but her account is protected. So...there you go.

The Post About Who's Sacrificing More Savings?

San Francisco Cable Car
Here's a transcript of a conversation between my friend Caryann and me.

Background:
She's about to move cross-country from California to Tennessee. She's also a diligent saver of money. Me? Not so much. She might seem the better person because of that, but she actually worries TOO much about saving. Yes, there is such a thing.

Me:
You should just pay for the movers since it will only cost $500 more than actually doing it yourself.

Caryann:
Maybe. It's just I'm running out of money.

Me:
I'm sorry, don't you have about a quadrillion dollars in savings?

Caryann:
But I don't want to touch that money.

Me:
What is savings for if not for a time like this? Plus, do it for me so I don't have to ride in a Penske truck from Amarillo to Nashville. And excuse me! I sacrificed MY savings for you by buying that plane ticket to Texas
.

Caryann:
I can't help it if you only had $150 in savings.

The Post About a Malihini in Hawaii

O'ahu, Hawaii
Girlfriends planning a trip to Hawaii.

It would be a breeze if we weren't so different.

Beth: Easiest traveler ever. Worked overseas for a season and still hits the road regularly for her current job. Loves to meet new people and occasionally will adopt an accent based on your country of origin.

Allison: Photographer who loves to hop a plane and find the sun so she can worship it in all its glory. She'll always offer to take a stranger's camera to snap a pic so no one's left out of the shot. She's not afraid to ditch her friends to find a sale. Always leaves room for wine in her luggage.

Caryann: Promotions director for a record label who jets off almost weekly for work. She is the ultimate in low maintenance and is generally a great travel companion because of it.

She is my vacation nemesis.

You see, Caryann is not pro-plan. She embraces the spontaneity of life and craves the adventure of never knowing what's going to happen next.

That is ridiculous.

There should be color-coded folders with data aggregated from Yelp and TripAdvisor and Urban Spoon. Timelines and lists and local transportation maps downloaded to your phone. A gathering of promo codes and Groupons and various medications to ease the transition across time zones. There should be a plan.

So EVERY time Caryann and I travel together, we find ourselves at odds. Her with no boarding pass and me with no room for error.

Exhibit A Today's Facebook exchange after I suggested we all purchase a Groupon for 50% off surfing lessons in Honolulu:

Caryann: There is nothing in me that wants to be in the ocean w/ fish touching me.

Me: That is why I love that we keep going on ocean trips. The logic of it.

So help us out. What are your recommendations for us as we visit Oahu, Hawaii? What should we see, avoid, eat, try? Or better yet, where are you headed on your next vacation - I'd love ideas for the next trip...

Malihini means "newcomer or stranger to Hawaii."

The Post About Christmas in Lights

Since I was blog silent during the recent major holidays, I failed to share some fine chasing rabbit moments.

For New Year's, I visited Caryann in Nashville with the other bestie, Kara. We found ourselves searching high and low for entertaining activities since Kara's husband requested we avoid as much debauchery as possible.

Caryann is a self-proclaimed non-planner when it comes to non-work. This trait led to a riveting visit to
The Lipton Lights in Franklin, TN. This light display at a neighborhood house collects donations for the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Helpful background information: Caryann tends to make friends with people who like to work puzzles. I am not one of those friends.

I apologize for that two minutes and eighteen seconds you'll never get back.

I'll be dropping a Whip My Hair cover soon.

The Post About Cali

I am actually sitting at Caryann's dining room table uploading a "few" pics from the last several days. I trekked across the country to see her for the holidays. And to see a state and ocean I've never encountered. An adventure was had by all.

She lives here. This is the Central Valley of California. An ideal location if you might like to mooch off a friend for a vacation.

The first thing I noticed was how long it took to get here. I've flown to Seattle, but I think when you have buddies, the time flies by. I only had my non-English speaking companion on the first flight and a bit of a spooning fuddy dud on the second. So I drank my ginger ales, read my "I Am America (And So Can You)" and listened to David Platt to make it seem a tad shorter than the actual 9 hours it took from drop-off to pick-up. It took a nano-second longer than planned because I got stopped by homeland security. I am guessing my mom's fudge and the Weight Watchers magazine packed together in my carry-on were more than a little suspicious.

Since it was Xmas, and every good houseguest brings a gift - I brought this little lady:

Her name is Lacretia. She helped us find our way.

Caryann is notoriously anti-Christmas. She loves the baby Jesus (and the grown-up Jesus), but could leave the secular and Christianized commerical behind. Since she knows I love a lil' bit of the red and green, she had this waiting:

Finally, as part of this intro post, Caryann's roommate - the snazzy Shannon - introduced me to my new obsession:

There is no better legal drug.

There are more posts to follow highlighting the road trip that did not disappoint.

Did you have a good Christmas?

The Post About Praying with Ulterior Motives

Oh my.
A conversation transcript between my friend Caryann and me as we discussed her 4-year-old nephew.

Caryann: Please pray for my nephew Matthew. The doctor found a mass in his abdomen that concerned him enough to ask for an ultrasound.

Me:
I will pray it is something he swallowed without anyone knowing. And therefore, it will make a fabulous story. Or better yet, I’ll pray it's missing when they take the ultrasound. Not everything in life has to be about comedy.

Caryann:
Actually, that would be kind of cool if it were a hobbit.

The Post About Traveling Graces

"Grace" is a fair description for my California co-trippers - Caryann and Alli.

In the shadow of the Hollywood Sign
They put up with me - a person who likens vacation planning to wedding planning. This would explain the occasional appearance of Tripzilla. It might also explain me throwing a hissy fit in the middle of Paramount Studios when we were late and they didn't accommodate our slow-waffle-eating-selves. Pathetic.

Back to the tripmaids. Let's tackle Caryann:
Crocs: So Right and So Wrong
She's just like this getup. Colorful and comfortable. Caryann's also a self-admitted bad manager of time.

And possibly footwear.

She is the best vacationer because she's always looking for an interesting experience and ice cream.

I'll Take Your Picture
Alli isn't assaulting this fella. Albeit, that wouldn't be completely out of character. She's actually offering to take his picture with a family member or bikini-clad vegan who needs to wash her hair. She was always wanting to help others get quality group pictures.

She was also always on the prowl for a Ross or Marshall's. WE'RE ON VACATION. NO SHOPPING AT DEPARTMENT STORES.

Emeryville Ikea
Unless it's Ikea.

As lovely as these two women were, there was a moment when I wanted to punch them in their faces.
San Fran City Hall
We walked 3 miles and I took a picture of San Francisco City Hall.

I wanted to be in a cab.

So what did we do in the city of 43 hills?

Still walking
Kept walking. Up hill. EVERY WAY.

But I didn't punch them. Do you know why?

Two Girls and A Map
Because you would miss moments when they get enthralled with geography. Who knew mapreading could be so fun?

No one.

The Post About Jane Austen Winning a Birthday Prize

I am 35 years old.

See how easy that was. Who even remembers why I had that pesky breakdown 5 months ago?

Caryann remembers. Today, she joins me smack dab in the middle of the 30's. And she claims my devastation was a mere hair out of place compared to her own train wreck of advancing age.

Which is unfortunate since I've never met anyone who takes birthdays as seriously as Caryann. Not her own as much as others. If your birthday coincides with her presence in your life, then you'll feel loved and honored and emotionally high-fived for 24 hours straight.

This past November, she gifted me with the one of my top 5 presents of all time:

Jane Austen Action Figure
It would be one of those things I grab as I run out of my burning house. In addition to my duvet and DVR and mascara.

One must be prepared for dreamy firemen.

Birthday Note from Caryann

She also bared her soul. Not the soul that's sarcastic and pushy about my spending habits, but the one that's the kind of friend God really knocked out of the park.

A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need. Proverbs 17:17

She's that friend. And that brother.

{images: Jamie}

Note: Only 2 more days to enter to win a bunch of Amazon cash. If you're Mark Zuckerberg, then "a bunch" is really relative.

The Post About Perfection

My friend, Caryann, was describing a friend of hers as “the perfect package.” You know – gorgeous, intelligent, funny, compassionate, blahbidi blah. It came up because her friend may be on the market for a boyfriend soon and Caryann was easing my worries for her – thanks. This begs the question...if this lovely lady is the perfect gift and therefore will have a boyfriend approximately 10 seconds after breaking up with her current boyfriend – then what kind of box does that make me? (And Caryann for that matter...)

I seem to always be working on me being closer to perfect. It's why...
...I work out (although I say it's for health reasons).
...I slather eye cream on 2x daily.

...I read Newsweek and Real Simple and CNN daily.
...I scrutinize 100 hairs a night looking for those pesky white ones (thanks Dad)
...I pray for kindness first when I recite my fruits of the spirit prayer.

It seems like a bit much, don't you think? Perhaps if I spent as much time pushing back those thoughts as I did pushing back my cuticles – I would realize that I'm not such a shabby gift box, after all. I have a good sense of humor; I'm passionate about anti-poverty issues; I love my family; I have a snazzy house; and I can type 65 words a minute. It may not be perfect, but who is?

The Post About Cougars & Their Kitten

On Sunday in Cali - I went to Caryann's church - Radiant Church. Such a great experience. I would definitely attend, if I lived there. Their pastor, Travis, is one of the kookier, but quite fabulous pastors I have met. You can see one of the more enjoyable videos of him promoting a Christmas series of messages here (He is wearing a pregnancy empathy belly. The background music sells it...)

That afternoon, Caryann and I headed to see the Redwoods (one of my requirements for visiting). Since the drive really requires 4-wheel drive, we needed a 4-wheel drive. She shared this info on the radio, and the lovely and talented Tyler volunteered. Here is 19-year-old Tyler and his baby, Silver Sky:

The next sentence will objectify both Tyler and his vehicle. "They are lovely." But if it helps, they are lovely both inside and out.

I have a special place in my heart for trees, as I have already mentioned previously. So seeing these gorgeous mother-trees was incredible. Period.

A view of the General Grant (third largest tree in the world...)

So you can see better get a feel for how large it is - Caryann and I at the base (this was a super quick pic since we had to jump the fence and illegally go hug him before the park rangers called for our incarceration...)

We may or may not have made poor choices again to get this shot:

We tried to climb this little snow hill from behind, but I kept disappearing into the drift. And by "disappear", I mean fall into a snow hole to my waist. I'm awesome.

To cap off the day (and truthfully, every day I was in Cali), we ate ice cream (which is probably why I kept falling into snow drifts.)
This ice cream shop is actually inside a Rite Aid. The Walgreens near my house needs to step up.
And then I came home. I miss you Cali.

The Post About Caryann

As I mentioned yesterday, Caryann is moving. It’s not like I was surprised by her announcement a few weeks ago… I had been privileged in praying for her and the doors God was opening and closing. So when she got the official word – I was over the moon. How great to be able to know with confidence that you are exactly where you should be in life, right?

Caryann is many things. She tends to run behind. She is frugal to the point of obsessive. She is a bit of a hoarder. However, that is just a snapshot. She is funny – in person, by text, through email, over the phone, in myspace comments – pretty much funny all the time. She is uber laid back and doesn’t let hardly anything stress her. She loves Lost and House and workplay and food and traveling and politics. She is willing to mock all things mockable.

Best of all, she is a friend indeed. Proverbs 27:17 “As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.” I am kinder, funnier, wiser, more loving, and definitely more committed in my relationship with God because of our friendship. I am grateful to Him and to her.

Bonus? Christmas in California.

The Post About Getting Married in 2010

{image: Merry......Christmas? by Nicolai Kjaergaard}

Speaking of Caryann... This is the transcript of a conversation we had this week regarding vacation planning.

Me: I think we should plan a girls' trip to Europe. Maybe take a Mediterranean cruise?

Caryann: I won't have any more vacation leave until 2011.

Me: Well, I hate to plan it that far out. I'd like to think one of us would get married or engaged before then...

Caryann: This really must be the most wonderful time of the year for you to actually think that. It would be a Christmas miracle.

Me: Shut it.

The Post About Cupcakes and Nashvegas

I recently popped up to Nashville to visit my friend Caryann.

In theory.

It was really a veiled attempt to eat my way across yet another city.

Friends at Puckett's
(l to r -
Scott, Josie, Gresham, Caryann).

These are people I enjoy standing under a sign I will now give similar affection.

Puckett's Grocery & Restaurant has 2 locations in the metro Nashville area and we graced the Franklin store. A great "country" feel with a breakfast buffet I love so much that I'm considering shacking up with it.

Ivey Cake
While in Franklin, we verified that Carrie Underwood made a good choice by choosing
Ivey Cake to create her recent wedding cupcake tower.

Ivey Cake Cupcakes
We tried the "I Do" and the "Hot Mess" and "The Breakup" and the "Crazy Ex."

Devouring the "I Do" which is vanilla cake with white vanilla buttercream icing, is a moment I will always cherish.

And try to replicate.

Naticakes
On the same block was this delightful refuge of sugar and all things pleasant.
Naticakes.

Naticakes Cupcakes
Cookies and Cream, Chocolate Salted Caramel, Pretty Princess, and Tuxedo.

Oh my.

That salted caramel haunts my dreams.

My suggestion? Get the
"I Do" from Ivey Cake and then walk one block and buy as much as your hands can hold at Naticakes.

And feel good about it since 10% of the profits support the Natalie Wynn Carter Foundation to help children around the world.

Who cares about a measly inch or two added to the thighs when it's for the children?

The Post About Being Forsaken in Your Mid-Thirties

My friend Caryann turns 34 today.

Guess who she is...

Caryann prom copy
Think...date in matching tux and small mammal on her head.

I really am quite fond of her.

That fondness has only increased now that she's joined me in the mid-thirties.

This means certain things:

Your skin will forsake you.
It will now crease and sag and splotch in ways you couldn't have imagined. And yet, you'll still have acne comparable to that of a 14-year-old rubbing peanut oil on her face.

Men will forsake you.
Up until now, men your age would date you. No more. They are now dating women 5-10 years younger. And that gap will only continue to grow. So now, start looking for single Dads at high school graduations.

Your diet will forsake you.
Remember when you could eat 4 slices of meat-lovers pizza, chase it with a milkshake and still be ready for bathing suit season? Now, you can down that same meal, but you'll need to chase it with Tums, a nap and an elastic waistband.

There is a bright side.

You're better at some things:

  • Managing money.
  • Thinking before speaking.
  • Driving.
  • Going with the flow.
  • Not wearing words on your bottom.
Maybe.

Plus, at my church - you're still grouped with the "cool people."

photo(12)
Of course, if you're not married or don't have children, the feeling of failure is swift

Happy Birthday.

The Post About An Eye for an Eye

I have tragic vision. Can't-make-out-the-E-at-the-top-of-the-chart vision. This weekend, I was popping out my right contact and failed to account for how dry my eye was. (High levels of MSG combined with one less hour of sleep.) Even upon meeting resistance, I kept tugging and found myself with only part of the lens when all was said and done. But I'm a trooper. I'm on day four of wearing ripped eyewear.

As I recounted this story to my friend Caryann, she explained my poor choice could cause damage to my cornea and literally "put my eye out." I immediately poo pooed that idea and reminded her I could always get a cornea from an organ donor (It's important to have a Plan B.) She supported me by pointing out the purchase could be made on
Craig's List - even encouraging me further by noting I could buy a cornea/kidney combo. She's a good friend.

Of course, I told her the whole thing was hogwash and my eye would be fine. Here's how the conversation played out:
Jamie: Nuh-uh. That's not gonna happen.
Caryann: Hasn't your eye doctor ever told you about the risk of wearing a torn contact?
Jamie: The only thing an eye doctor has ever told me is "Ma'am, you'll need to move to that side of the shop to pick out glasses. Your head's a bit big for a regular pair."

Thank you Lenscrafters.
